The Ear Trust

The Ear TrustHundreds of babies will be born deaf in Yorkshire this year. So it is vital to identify deafness as early as possible and provide skilled support for the child and parent. Early support can help the family cope with extra demands of deafness in a positive way and will allow the development of the child’s full potential in preparation for schooling and, ultimately, work.

The Ear Trust charity was founded 1990 to support the work of YCIS. Its achievements include the funding of Bradford Royal Infirmary’s first cochlear implant operation - the first in the region. The Ear Trust continues to support YCIS in many ways:

  • it provides help and support to hearing impaired people and their families
  • it supports the Yorkshire Cochlear Implant Service, which has helped more than several hundred families across the North
  • it performs specialist training to support professionals working with deaf children and adults
  • it buys equipment not readily available on the NHS

The Ear Trust :: What We Need

As we have continued to grow our current accommodation is becoming cramped. The way forward is to build a new unit - Listening For Life Centre - that will house the assessment programme for the neonates, children and adults referred to us.

The plans are at an advanced stage. Cost of the building is approximatley £2.5 million.

Equiping the center will be a key issue. Some of the equipment we need includes:

  • Five Sound proof rooms - 3 Paediatric and 2 Adult
  • Creation of a teaching /meeting facility
  • Screening otoacoustic emissions
  • Automated brain stem audiology screening tympanometer
  • Sound level meters
  • Diagnostic otoacoustic auditory emissions
  • Visual re-enforced audiology tests
  • Meg SS3 free field warbler
  • Diagnostic tympanometer
  • Phoenix Speech tests
  • Aurical hearing aid test box
  • aAditbase user licence and software
  • POCIA MRC hearing aid hardware
  • Computers, adderlink boxes and printers
  • Biologic NAV Pro steady state evoked potential
  • Toys

And the cost? We estimate £500,000 of which £250,000 is for the special audiological rooms.
